How Acoustic Gym Flooring Works
Gym noise in a building is mostly impact noise: the thud of a weight hitting the floor travels straight into the floor structure and out through the ceiling below and the walls next door. The way to stop it is to absorb the impact before it reaches the structure.
These tiles do that in two ways. The 30mm depth of dense, resilient rubber compresses under a dropped weight and spreads the energy over time, so the peak force reaching the floor is much lower. The mass of the tile, around 30kg per square metre, also damps vibration in the floor itself. That is why the tiles work especially well on timber joist floors, which are the norm in UK flats and upstairs rooms.
The result in our house testing was up to 75dB less drop noise than on the bare floor. Your own result depends on the building, the floor construction and how you train, so use the tips below to get the most from your floor.
Get the Quietest Possible Gym Floor
Cover the whole training area: one tile under the dumbbells leaves the rest of the floor to carry the noise. Floor the full area you train on.
Butt the joins tightly: tight joins keep the floor acting as one continuous acoustic layer.
Add acoustic underlay for flats: for the best result over bedrooms or neighbours, lay our acoustic rubber underlay first and the tiles on top. The two layers work together to decouple the gym from the building.
Leave a small gap at the walls: about 5mm between the tiles and the walls stops vibration passing straight into the walls.
Lower weights, don't drop from overhead: in flats and upstairs rooms, set barbells down from the hip rather than dropping from overhead, and use bumper plates.
Where These Tiles Are Used
Flats and apartments: home gyms above neighbours and shared hallways
Upstairs home gyms: spare bedrooms and loft conversions over living rooms and bedrooms
Terraced and semi-detached houses: gyms against a party wall
PT studios and gyms above other tenants: shops, offices and treatment rooms below
Hotel, residential and corporate gyms: where guests and neighbours come first
Schools and universities: gyms above classrooms, labs and offices
Built for Heavy Training
Quiet doesn't mean soft. At 30mm and 1,000 kg/m³, the tiles are firm and stable underfoot and rated for 200kg+ drops, so they handle free weights, kettlebell circuits, deadlifts, plyometrics and cardio machines. They also protect the floor underneath from dents and damage.
1m or 500mm Tiles?
1m x 1m (1m² each, approx. 30kg): the fastest install and fewest joins for bigger floors
500 x 500mm (0.25m² each, approx. 7.5kg): easy to carry upstairs, ideal for small rooms, corners and awkward shapes
You can mix both sizes in the same floor.

How Many Tiles Do I Need?
Tiles are laid in a grid. For 1m tiles, round the room length and width up to the next whole metre and multiply. For 500mm tiles, divide each measurement by 0.5, round up and multiply. Tiles along the walls are cut to fit. The How many do I need? calculator at the top of the page does this for you.

Installation
Acclimatise: lay the tiles flat in the room for 24 hours before fitting.
Prepare the floor: any clean, dry, level hard floor, including concrete, screed, timber or floorboards. Lay acoustic underlay first if you are using it.
Lay the tiles: start in one corner and butt each tile tightly against the last, leaving about 5mm at the walls.
Cut to fit: cut the perimeter tiles with a sharp heavy-duty knife against a straight edge, or a jigsaw.
Finish open edges: where the floor ends in the open room, fit the 500mm safety ramp edges from our 30mm heavy duty tiles page (choose "500mm Safety Ramp Edge" in the options there). They fit these acoustic tiles and give a smooth step-down.
Most rooms are finished in an hour or two, with no adhesive and no trades.
Free UK mainland delivery on every order, with no minimum spend. Orders placed before 2pm Monday to Friday are dispatched the same day. Small orders travel by courier and larger orders are delivered on a pallet. 14-day returns on unused tiles in their original condition.
Will these stop my neighbours hearing my workouts?
They make a very large difference to impact noise, the thuds and bangs that travel through floors. For the quietest result in a flat, cover the whole training area, add our acoustic underlay underneath and lower weights rather than dropping them from overhead.
How was the 75dB figure measured?
By house testing: dropping weights on the bare floor and on the tiles and measuring the difference in drop noise. It is a real-world result, and your own figure will depend on your floor construction, the room and the weights you use.
What is the difference between these and standard 30mm gym tiles?
Both are 30mm and 200kg+ drop rated. The acoustic tiles are made from a denser 1,000 kg/m³ compound for extra mass and damping, which is why we recommend them for flats, upstairs rooms and shared buildings.
Are there ramp edges for these tiles?
Yes. The 500mm safety ramp edges sold with our 30mm heavy duty tiles fit these acoustic tiles. Order one for every 500mm of edge that finishes in open floor; edges against a wall don't need them.
Do they work on wooden floors?
Yes. Timber joist floors are the most common floors in UK flats and upstairs rooms, and the mass of the tiles helps damp the vibration of the timber itself. Check that the floor is sound and level before you lay the tiles.
Can a first-floor room take the weight?
The tiles add about 30kg per square metre. That is well within normal domestic floor loadings, but if you plan a heavily loaded rack and platform in an older building, it is sensible to check with a builder or structural engineer.
Do I need acoustic underlay as well?
Not always. The tiles work well on their own for most garage and ground-floor gyms. For gyms above bedrooms, living rooms or neighbours, the tiles on top of our acoustic underlay give the best result.
Do I need adhesive?
No. The weight of the tiles keeps them in place, and loose-laying keeps the floor acoustically separate from the structure.
Yes. We supply developers, architects, fit-out contractors and gym operators across the UK. Send us your floor plan for a bulk quote, usually within 24 hours.
