Choosing the Right Gym Flooring
What is the best gym flooring for a home gym in the UK?
The best gym flooring for a home gym depends on your workout type. Rubber interlocking tiles (15–20mm) are the most popular choice — they protect your floor from dropped weights, dampen noise, and are easy to install without glue or tools. Our 16mm Rubber Gym Tiles are the UK's best-selling home gym flooring option. For cardio-only setups, EVA foam tiles offer a lighter, more affordable solution. For heavy lifting with deadlifts or Olympic lifts, go for 20–30mm rubber tiles for maximum protection.
How thick should gym flooring be?
Thickness depends on the intensity of your workouts and the surface beneath:
6–10mm — Light use: yoga, stretching, bodyweight exercises, cardio equipment on concrete.
15–20mm — Mixed use: free weights, kettlebells, moderate lifting on concrete or wooden floors.
20–30mm — Heavy lifting: deadlifts, Olympic lifts, squat racks, barbell drops.
30mm+ — Commercial gyms, CrossFit boxes, weightlifting platforms, and high-traffic facilities.
As a general rule: if you're dropping weights, go thicker. Our 16mm tiles are ideal for most home gyms, while our 30mm Olympic tiles are designed for serious lifting.
What is the difference between rubber gym tiles, rolls, and mats?
Rubber Tiles — Interlocking puzzle-edge tiles that clip together without adhesive. Ideal for most home gyms and commercial spaces. Easy to install, remove, and reconfigure.
Rubber Rolls — Continuous rubber sheeting, typically 1m wide and cut to any length. Provides seamless coverage with no joins. Best for large commercial gyms and studio floors.
Rubber Mats — Individual flat mats placed under specific equipment (e.g., under a treadmill or bench). Best for protecting a single piece of equipment without covering the whole floor.

What gym flooring is best for deadlifts and Olympic lifting?
For deadlifts and Olympic lifting, you need a minimum of 20mm thick rubber flooring to absorb impact and protect your subfloor. We recommend our 30mm Olympic Lifting Tiles, which are specifically engineered to withstand repeated heavy drops. For professional platforms, many coaches recommend a triple-layer system: rubber base layer, plywood middle, and rubber top. Our team can advise on the right setup for your space — call 01282 277 710.
What gym flooring is best for a commercial gym?
For commercial gyms, durability and ease of maintenance are the priority. We recommend our commercial rubber rolls for main floor areas — they provide seamless coverage, are easy to clean, and withstand heavy foot traffic and equipment for years. For weightlifting zones, use 30mm+ interlocking rubber tiles. We have fitted over 500 professional gyms across the UK. Call us for a free site survey and trade quote on 01282 277 710.
Can I use gym flooring on top of carpet?
Yes — our interlocking rubber tiles and EVA mats can be laid directly on top of carpet for light to moderate use. However, if you are placing heavy equipment (squat racks, cable machines) or dropping weights, we recommend laying your flooring on a hard subfloor (concrete or wood) for maximum stability. Thick carpet can cause rubber tiles to compress unevenly and may cause equipment to wobble. If you must use carpet, add a rigid board underlay first to create a firm base.
What is the best gym flooring for a garage gym?
Garage gyms sit on concrete, which can be damp and cold — so you need flooring that is durable, moisture-resistant, and provides enough cushioning to protect the concrete from dropped weights. Our 16mm Rubber Gym Tiles are perfect for most garage setups: they are water-resistant, easy to clean, and interlock without adhesive. For heavier lifting, upgrade to 20–30mm tiles. Make sure to sweep and dry the garage floor before installation.
Installation
How do I install gym flooring?
Interlocking Tiles — No tools, glue, or adhesive needed. Simply click the tiles together like puzzle pieces. Start from one corner and work outward. Use a utility knife or jigsaw to trim tiles at the edges.
Rubber Rolls — Unroll and allow to acclimatise for 24 hours. Cut to size with a utility knife and straight edge. Rolls can be taped or bonded at the edges if needed.
Rubber Mats — Simply place in position. No installation required.
All our flooring is designed to be DIY-friendly. No specialist tools or tradespeople needed. Most customers complete installation in under 2 hours.
Do I need adhesive or glue to install rubber gym flooring?
No — our interlocking rubber tiles and most mats require no glue or adhesive. They stay in place via their own weight and the interlocking design. Rubber rolls in commercial settings may be bonded at edges using contact adhesive or double-sided tape for a cleaner finish, but this is optional. We never recommend permanently gluing tiles — it makes them difficult to remove and replace individual damaged tiles later.
How do I cut rubber gym tiles to fit?
Use a sharp utility knife (Stanley knife) and a metal straight edge to score and cut rubber tiles. For curved cuts around pipes or columns, use a jigsaw with a fine-tooth blade. Mark your cut line with chalk or a marker first. Cuts are clean and easy — our tiles are designed to be trimmed on-site to fit any room shape.
How do I calculate how much gym flooring I need?
Simply measure the length and width of your space in metres and multiply to get the area in m². Add 5–10% extra for cuts and wastage, especially for irregular room shapes. Our product pages include a coverage calculator — enter your room dimensions to get an instant quantity and price. If you are unsure, contact us with your measurements and we will work it out for you.

Product & Technical Questions
Does rubber gym flooring smell?
New rubber flooring can have a mild odour when first unpacked — this is completely normal and not harmful. The smell typically fades within 1–3 days once the flooring is laid and the room is well ventilated. To speed up the process, leave windows open and allow fresh air to circulate. If you are sensitive to smells, our EVA foam tiles are virtually odour-free.
Can I use your flooring outdoors?
Yes — our outdoor rubber tiles are UV-resistant, waterproof, and weatherproof, designed to withstand the British climate year-round. They are ideal for outdoor gym areas, boot camp spaces, and alfresco fitness zones. Ensure the outdoor surface is flat, firm, and well-drained before installation. Our indoor rubber tiles can also be used in covered outdoor areas (e.g., under a canopy or pergola).
How do I clean and maintain gym flooring?
Rubber gym flooring is very low maintenance. For everyday cleaning, sweep or vacuum to remove dust and debris, then mop with a mild soap solution and warm water. Avoid harsh chemicals, bleach, or oil-based cleaners as these can degrade the rubber over time. For stubborn marks, a diluted multi-purpose cleaner works well. Allow to dry fully before use.
Is gym flooring slip-resistant?
Yes — all our rubber gym flooring has a textured, non-slip surface that provides excellent grip for bare feet, trainers, and lifting shoes. Rubber naturally provides anti-slip properties even when wet. This makes it safe for all types of training including Olympic lifting, HIIT, and yoga. Our tiles and rolls meet standard safety requirements for gym use in the UK.
How long does gym flooring last?
High-quality rubber gym flooring can last 10–20 years with proper care. Our commercial-grade rubber products are designed for heavy daily use and will outlast cheaper foam alternatives by many years. Rubber is naturally resistant to compression, UV damage, and moisture — the three main causes of premature flooring failure.
Is rubber gym flooring eco-friendly?
Many of our rubber flooring products are manufactured using recycled rubber — typically from recycled car tyres. This makes them an environmentally responsible choice that diverts waste from landfill. The durability of rubber also means it does not need replacing frequently, reducing material consumption over the long term. Look for the recycled rubber label on individual product pages for specific information.
