Full Technical Specifications
What Makes This a Premium Roll
These rolls are manufactured from solid SBR (Styrene-Butadiene Rubber) with no foam core — the same material specification used in professional commercial gym fitouts across the UK. Unlike entry-level foam-backed rolls or budget EVA alternatives, solid SBR maintains its dimensional integrity under years of continuous heavy use without permanent compression or degradation.
🏅 EN 13893 Slip Certified
EN 13893 is the European standard for slip resistance in wet conditions. DS-rated compliance means these rolls meet the safety threshold required for commercial gym, institutional, and public-access installations. Most budget rolls available elsewhere carry no EN certification whatsoever.
🔬 REACH & CE Compliant
REACH (EU chemical safety) compliance confirms no hazardous substances above regulated limits — essential for NHS, education, and local authority procurement. CE marking confirms conformity with applicable EU/UK product safety directives for commercial supply.
🔇 Up to 40% Noise Reduction
Dense SBR rubber significantly attenuates impact noise and floor vibration — critical for gyms in multi-storey buildings, upstairs spaces, hotels, and shared premises where sound transfer is a compliance or neighbour concern.
🚫 Zero Foam Core
Foam-core rolls compress permanently under heavy equipment — machines, squat racks, and cable stations create permanent indentations within months. Solid SBR recovers its shape completely under repeated load, maintaining a flat, stable surface for the life of the floor.
💧 Non-Porous Surface
Solid rubber does not absorb sweat, moisture, or cleaning fluids. The non-porous surface resists bacterial growth, mould, and odour build-up — fundamental for any commercial facility that must maintain hygiene standards under daily cleaning.
🔁 Seamless 10m Coverage
A single roll covers a full 10 square metres with zero joins. Compare this to interlocking tiles which create visible seams every 0.5–1m — each a potential trip hazard and dirt trap. Continuous rolls are the only option for facilities that demand a professional, seamless floor finish.

Thickness Selection Guide
The single most important decision when buying rubber gym rolls. Match your thickness to your actual training activity — not just general guidance.
| Thickness | Primary Application | Training Type | Key Consideration |
|---|---|---|---|
| 4mm | Cardio zones, yoga studios, spin rooms | Treadmills, bikes, rowing, pilates, stretching | Maximum floor coverage per roll weight. Ideal over existing hard floors |
| 6mm | Group fitness, light PT studios, reception areas | Aerobics, bodyweight, light equipment | Good noise reduction step-up from 4mm — preferred for upper-floor installs |
| 8mm | Home gyms, functional fitness areas, PT studios | Dumbbells to 20kg, kettlebells, functional training | Most popular home gym choice. Balances protection and value |
| 10mm ★ BEST SELLER | Commercial free weight floors, box gym main areas | Dumbbells, moderate barbells, functional training, CrossFit warm-up | The standard commercial spec. Used in 500+ of our gym installations |
| 12mm | Heavy free weight areas, high-impact commercial zones | Heavy dumbbells, barbell work, high-intensity functional training | Maximum protection in roll format. Step up to tiles for repeated Olympic barbell drops |
⚠️ Important: For repeated Olympic barbell drops from height (deadlifts, cleans, snatches), we recommend our 20mm–30mm interlocking tiles. Roll flooring — regardless of thickness — is not rated for repeated heavy barbell impact from height.
Where These Rolls Are Installed
Why Choose Rolls Over Tiles?
- Zero seams across the floor: A 10m roll covers a full training lane or studio zone without a single join — no dirt traps, no trip hazards, no visible tile grid breaking up the floor's appearance
- Professional, client-facing appearance: Commercial gym operators, hotel fitness rooms, and PT studios choose rolls because the seamless finish reads as premium. Tiles look like a temporary installation
- Faster installation over large areas: Unrolling and butt-joining takes significantly less time than laying individual tiles across 50–200 sqm of commercial floor space
- Lower cost per square metre at scale: Roll format is consistently more cost-effective than tiles when covering open, rectangular areas with minimal obstacles
- Better performance with underfloor heating: Rolls lie flat and maintain better thermal conductivity contact with the subfloor than interlocking tiles
- Ideal for irregular shapes and long corridors: Rolls can be cut on-site to any length using a standard utility knife — no specialist tools, no wastage from tile sizing constraints
Installation Guide
These rolls support two installation methods depending on your application — both are achievable without specialist tools:
Method 1 — Loose-Lay
Method 2 — Fully Bonded (Commercial)
The Material: Why Solid SBR Rubber
SBR (Styrene-Butadiene Rubber) is a synthetic rubber compound developed specifically for applications requiring high resistance to abrasion, compression, and impact. It is the material of choice for commercial gym flooring because of its unique combination of properties that no foam or vinyl alternative can replicate:
- Compression set resistance: SBR maintains its original thickness under sustained compressive load — gym machines and heavy equipment leave no permanent marks or depressions over time
- Abrasion resistance: The dense rubber surface resists surface wear from metal plates, equipment legs, and heavy foot traffic that would visibly degrade softer materials within months
- Dimensional stability: SBR does not expand or contract significantly with temperature changes — critical for commercial installations where floor gaps or bubbles would be unacceptable
- Chemical resistance: Resistant to sweat, water, diluted cleaning chemicals, and gym chalk — maintaining surface integrity under the daily cleaning routines of a commercial facility
- Sound and vibration attenuation: The density of SBR absorbs impact energy and converts it to negligible heat rather than transmitting it through the subfloor as airborne or structure-borne noise
- Recycled origin: SBR gym flooring is manufactured from post-consumer recycled rubber, giving it a significantly lower embodied carbon footprint than virgin synthetic materials
Cleaning & Maintenance
Daily
Sweep or vacuum to remove loose debris, chalk dust, and sand particles — these act as abrasives if left underfoot and cause accelerated surface wear over time.
Weekly
Mop with warm water and a pH-neutral gym floor cleaner. Avoid bleach, solvent-based products, and strong alkaline cleaners — these degrade the surface binder over time and may cause discolouration. A 1:4 dilution of white vinegar in water is safe for stubborn stains.
Do Not Use
- Steam cleaners — the sustained heat damages the rubber compound
- Oil-based cleaning products — these soften the surface and attract dirt
- Bleach or strong disinfectants — these attack the polyurethane binder
- Abrasive scrubbing pads — these scratch the non-slip surface texture
Frequently Asked Questions
What does EN 13893 certification mean and why does it matter?
EN 13893 is the European standard for slip resistance of floor coverings under wet conditions. DS-rated compliance (the standard's highest category) means the floor meets the slip resistance requirements for use in commercial and public-access spaces where wet footfall is likely — gyms, sports halls, and fitness studios. Most budget rolls carry no independent slip certification at all.
What is the difference between these rolls and the crumb rubber rolls?
These premium rolls are manufactured from solid SBR rubber compound — a homogeneous material throughout its thickness. Our crumb rubber rolls are made from recycled granulate bound with polyurethane. The solid SBR rolls have a smoother, more uniform surface appearance (with a speckled fleck), carry EN 13893 certification, and are the preferred choice for client-facing commercial spaces where appearance matters. Crumb rubber rolls are typically more cost-effective for large back-of-house areas.
Can these rolls be installed over underfloor heating?
Yes, with precautions. Switch off underfloor heating 24 hours before installation and leave it off for a minimum of 48 hours after bonding to allow the adhesive to cure correctly. Once cured, UFH can be used normally. Do not exceed 27°C floor surface temperature in operation. Loose-lay (non-bonded) installation is also fully compatible with UFH without any special precautions.
Are these rolls suitable for upstairs or above-ground gym installations?
Yes. Solid SBR rubber is one of the most effective materials for reducing impact noise transmission in upstairs gym installations. The 8mm and above thicknesses provide meaningful attenuation of impact vibration. For domestic upstairs gym rooms, 10–12mm solid SBR rolls are our most recommended option to protect the relationship with neighbours below.
Do you supply compliance documentation for institutional or commercial procurement?
Yes. Full product data sheets, CE declarations of conformity, EN 13893 test certificates, and REACH compliance statements are available on request. Contact our commercial team at sales@gymflooringuk.uk or call 01282 277 710 for documentation required by NHS, local authority, education, or planning processes.
What adhesive do you recommend for bonded installation?
We recommend a 2-component polyurethane (2K PU) adhesive — Stauf VPU 155 or equivalent. Apply with a B3 notched trowel at approximately 300–400g/m². Do not use contact adhesive or water-based adhesives, as these do not provide sufficient bond strength for commercial rubber flooring under heavy load.
Can I order custom lengths shorter or longer than 10m?
Yes. We can supply rolls cut to any custom length from 1 metre upwards. Contact our team with your exact requirements and we will cut to spec before despatch. Custom lengths are typically despatched within 2–3 working days. Standard pricing is per linear metre.
How many rolls do I need? Is there a calculation tool?
Each roll covers exactly 10 square metres (10m length × 1m width). Multiply your room length by width to get sqm, then divide by 10 for the number of rolls. Add 10% for cuts and waste. For example: 8m × 6m = 48 sqm ÷ 10 = 4.8 rolls → order 6 rolls (including waste). Call us on 01282 277 710 for a free quantity calculation on your specific room dimensions.
