Which Thickness Do You Need?
Choosing the right thickness is the single most important decision when buying rubber gym rolls. Here's exactly what each is designed for:
| Thickness | Best For | Training Type | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| 4mm | Cardio zones, treadmill areas, studios | Running, cycling, yoga, pilates | Lightest and most flexible — ideal over existing flooring |
| 6mm | General gym areas, PT studios | Bodyweight training, light cardio, stretching | Good all-rounder for light-use home gym spaces |
| 8mm | Home gyms, functional fitness, CrossFit warm-up zones | Dumbbells up to 20kg, kettlebells, bodyweight | Most popular for home garage gyms — excellent balance of price and performance |
| 10mm ★ MOST POPULAR | Commercial gyms, free weight areas, box gyms | Dumbbells, barbells, moderate free weights | Standard commercial spec — used in 500+ professional gym installs |
| 12mm | Heavy free weight zones, high-impact areas | Heavy dumbbells, Olympic lifting warm-up, CrossFit | Maximum protection from a roll format — step up from 10mm for high-impact use |
⚠ For repeated Olympic barbell drops, we recommend our 20mm–30mm interlocking tiles instead — roll flooring is not rated for repeated heavy barbell impact.
What Is Recycled Crumb Rubber Gym Flooring?
Crumb rubber gym flooring is manufactured from post-consumer recycled rubber granules — primarily from end-of-life vehicle tyres — that are processed into granulate, mixed with a polyurethane binder, and vulcanised under heat and pressure into dense, stable flooring sheets.
The result is a material with exceptional dimensional stability, high resistance to compression, and a naturally textured surface that provides grip in wet and dry conditions. The speckled appearance is a hallmark of crumb rubber's recycled origin — every roll has a distinctive texture that sets it apart from homogeneous solid rubber.
Why Recycled Crumb Rubber Outperforms Cheap Foam Alternatives
- Lifespan: 15–20+ years vs 1–3 years for EVA foam — significantly lower total cost of ownership
- Compression resistance: Crumb rubber recovers its shape under repeated load — foam permanently compresses and dents under heavy equipment
- Hygiene: Non-porous, anti-microbial surface doesn't absorb sweat or moisture — foam absorbs and breeds bacteria
- Fire behaviour: Rubber is self-extinguishing — foam is highly flammable
- Noise reduction: Dense crumb rubber absorbs vibration and impact noise — critical for upstairs installations and shared premises
- Environmental: Manufactured from recycled rubber diverted from landfill — foam uses virgin petrochemical materials
Where Are Rubber Gym Rolls Used?
Rubber gym rolls are the preferred format wherever a seamless, continuous floor surface is needed. They cover large areas efficiently with minimal waste and fewer visible joins than tiles.
Rolls vs Tiles — Which Is Right for Your Space?
✅ Choose Rolls When...
- ▸ You need to cover a large, open floor area quickly
- ▸ You want a seamless finish with no visible tile joins
- ▸ The area is primarily cardio, studio, or light weights
- ▸ You're covering an awkward or irregular room shape
- ▸ Budget efficiency per sqm is a priority
- ▸ Underfloor heating is present (rolls sit flatter)
🔲 Consider Tiles Instead When...
- ▸ You need 20mm+ for heavy barbell drops
- ▸ The floor is modular or might change layout
- ▸ Partial replacement of worn sections is likely
- ▸ You need a tool-free, no-adhesive installation
- ▸ The area is a dedicated Olympic lifting platform
Installation Guide — Rubber Gym Flooring Rolls
These rolls can be installed loose-laid (temporary or home use) or fully bonded (commercial/permanent). Both methods are straightforward for an experienced DIYer or professional installer.
Method 1: Loose-Lay (Home Gyms, Temporary Installations)
Method 2: Fully Bonded (Commercial, Permanent Installations)
Available Colours & What They Mean
All four colours — Black, Red, Blue, and White — are produced from the same recycled SBR crumb rubber compound. The colour is achieved through EPDM granule content mixed into the top layer during vulcanisation, giving consistent colour throughout the surface depth (not a painted or coated finish that will chip or fade).
- Black: The most popular commercial choice — conceals wear marks and scuffs in high-traffic areas
- Red: Frequently used to zone free-weight areas or add brand identity in commercial installs
- Blue: Popular for PT studios, martial arts warm-up areas, and corporate gym environments
- White / Light Grey: Used in yoga studios, functional fitness spaces, and high-spec aesthetic installs
Frequently Asked Questions
What subfloors are these rolls compatible with?
Compatible with concrete, screed, ceramic tile, and existing hard flooring. For wooden subfloors, ensure boards are secure with no flex or spring. For underfloor heating, switch heating off 24 hours before installation and leave off for 48 hours after laying. Rolls should not be laid on carpet or compressible surfaces.
Can I order rolls cut to a specific custom length?
Yes. In addition to the standard 10m pre-cut roll, we can supply rubber gym flooring rolls cut to any custom length from 1 metre upwards. Contact our team with your required dimensions and we will cut and despatch within 2–3 working days. Custom lengths are priced per linear metre.
Do the rolls need to be glued down?
For home gym and temporary installations, no adhesive is needed — the weight of the rubber holds it firmly in place on a clean, flat subfloor. For permanent commercial installations and bonded applications, we recommend a 2-component PU adhesive applied with a notched trowel. Contact us for adhesive recommendations matched to your subfloor type.
Will the rubber smell when first unrolled?
New rubber flooring has a mild, characteristic rubber scent that dissipates within 3–7 days in a ventilated space. Our rolls use low-VOC recycled SBR rubber — significantly less odour than virgin rubber products. Ventilating the space for the first week accelerates the process. The smell is not harmful and does not indicate off-gassing of toxic compounds.
How do I clean rubber gym flooring rolls?
Daily: sweep or vacuum to remove debris. Weekly: mop with warm water and a pH-neutral gym floor cleaner. Avoid bleach, solvent-based cleaners, and strong alkalis — these degrade the polyurethane binder over time. For stubborn stains, a diluted white vinegar solution (1:4 with water) is safe on rubber. Do not use steam cleaners.
Can rubber gym rolls be used outdoors?
Our standard crumb rubber rolls are designed for indoor use. For covered outdoor areas with protection from direct rainfall (canopies, sheltered terraces, garages), they perform well. For exposed outdoor use, we recommend our UV-stable outdoor rubber tiles instead — contact us for details.
How many rolls do I need for my space?
Each roll covers exactly 10 square metres (10m × 1m). Measure your room length × width in metres to calculate your sqm. Add 5–10% for cuts and waste. For example: a 5m × 4m room = 20 sqm = 2 rolls + 10% waste allowance = 2–3 rolls. Call us on 01282 277 710 and we'll calculate the exact quantity for you free of charge.
Do you offer trade or bulk pricing?
Yes. We supply NHS trusts, commercial gym operators, schools, universities, and contractors across the UK at trade pricing. Contact our commercial team for a bulk quote — typically turnaround within 24 hours. We can also produce specification sheets and compliance documentation for institutional orders.
