✔️ 1m² Per Tile — 1 Tile = 1m² | ✔️ 400kg/m² Static Rated | ✔️ R10 Slip Resistant | ✔️ CE & REACH Certified
The 20mm interlocking rubber gym tile is the UK benchmark for serious home gym installations and commercial fitness facilities. At exactly 1000mm × 1000mm (1m²), one tile covers one square metre — straightforward to calculate, fast to install. Built from high-density rubber at 1.1–1.3 g/cm³ and rated to 400kg per m² static load without permanent deformation, these tiles are used in PT studios, CrossFit boxes, school sports halls and hotel gyms across the UK.
The 4-sided puzzle interlocking edge connects without adhesive, creating a seamless, stable floor that holds position under heavy equipment and dynamic training without shifting, gapping or lifting at the joins.

Why 20mm Is the Benchmark Thickness for UK Gyms
10–15mm tiles work for cardio zones and light dumbbell use. 30mm+ is for Olympic lifting platforms and dedicated drop zones. 20mm is the all-rounder — thick enough to absorb impact from free weights, stable under heavy static equipment, and the most cost-effective commercial specification available.
| Thickness | Best For | Rated Capacity |
|---|---|---|
| 10–15mm | Cardio, yoga, light dumbbell use (<50kg) | Light equipment only |
| 20mm ★ THIS TILE | Home gyms, PT studios, CrossFit, commercial weight areas | 400 kg/m² static | ~80–100kg drop |
| 30mm+ | Olympic lifting platforms, dedicated drop zones | Heavy barbell drops, 200kg+ |
What Equipment Works on 20mm Rubber Tiles?
- ✅ Squat racks & power cages — 400 kg/m² static rating covers all home and light-commercial racks
- ✅ Treadmills, rowers, bikes, cross-trainers — vibration absorbed, noise reduced
- ✅ Cable machines & lat pulldowns — static load well within rating
- ✅ Free weights & dumbbells to ~100kg drop — excellent subfloor protection
- ✅ CrossFit & functional training — sled pushes, battle ropes, box jumps, HIIT
- ✅ Bench press, deadlift, squat — daily training including controlled barbell work
- ⚠️ Repeated heavy Olympic drops (100kg+) — upgrade to 30mm or use a lifting platform on top
How Many Tiles Do You Need?
Each tile is exactly 1m². Measure your room length × width = total m² = number of tiles. Add 10% for edge cuts and waste.
| Room Size | Area | Tiles (inc. 10% waste) |
|---|---|---|
| 3m × 3m garage gym | 9 m² | 10 tiles |
| 4m × 5m garage gym | 20 m² | 22 tiles |
| 5m × 6m large garage | 30 m² | 33 tiles |
| 6m × 6m PT studio | 36 m² | 40 tiles |
| 8m × 10m commercial zone | 80 m² | 88 tiles |
Installation — One Person, No Tools Required
- Acclimatise: Leave tiles flat in the room for 24h at 15°C+, especially in cold garages. Rubber expands at room temperature — acclimating prevents gaps forming after installation.
- Prepare subfloor: Must be clean, dry and level. Works on concrete, screed, timber and existing hard flooring. Do not install on carpet.
- Plan your layout: Start from the centre or a fixed wall. Sketch the layout first to minimise waste cuts at the perimeter.
- Connect tiles: Press puzzle edges firmly together. A rubber mallet helps seat 20mm tiles snugly at the joins. Work row by row.
- Cut edge tiles: Score 5–6 times with a sharp Stanley knife and metal straight edge, then snap clean. Use a jigsaw for complex cuts around obstacles.
- Finish with safety ramps: Fit rubber ramp strips at all exposed tile edges to eliminate trip hazards and achieve a professional finish.
Frequently Asked Questions — 20mm Rubber Gym Tiles
Q: Can I drop a loaded barbell on 20mm tiles?
A: Yes, for moderate drops up to ~80–100kg. For regular heavy Olympic drops above 100kg (failed deadlifts, snatch misses), upgrade to 30mm tiles in the drop zone or build a dedicated lifting platform on top of the 20mm base layer.
Q: Will they smell of rubber?
A: New rubber tiles have a characteristic odour that is completely harmless. In a ventilated space it dissipates within 1–4 weeks. Washing tiles with mild soapy water before installation accelerates the process.
Q: Can I install these in a rented property without damaging the floor?
A: Yes. No adhesive is needed. The tiles lift and relay cleanly without leaving any residue, marks or damage. Ideal for rented gyms, studios and home setups.
Q: Can I extend the floor later if I need more coverage?
A: Yes. The puzzle edge profile is consistent across all batches — additional tiles connect directly to existing tiles at any time. Order a few extra from your original purchase for guaranteed colour matching.
Q: How long does installation take?
A: One person typically lays a 20m² floor (20 tiles) in 2–3 hours including layout planning and edge cuts. Two people complete the same area in 60–90 minutes.
Q: Are these suitable for commercial gym use?
A: Yes — 400 kg/m² static rating, R10 slip resistance, CE and REACH certification all meet commercial premises requirements. For trade pricing on large orders, contact us with your floor dimensions for a quote within 24 hours.
Q: Do I need adhesive or a professional installer?
A: Neither. The 4-sided interlocking puzzle edge is fully self-sufficient — no adhesive, no screws, no contractors. A standard home gym install is a genuine DIY job requiring only a Stanley knife for edge cuts.
