20mm Interlocking Rubber Gym Tiles UK
Our 20mm interlocking rubber gym tiles are the UK's most popular gym flooring choice for home gyms, personal training studios, and light commercial gym use. Made from high-density virgin or recycled rubber, these 1m x 1m tiles provide superior protection, cushioning, and stability — with a simple interlocking puzzle edge that makes DIY installation quick, clean, and adhesive-free.
Why Choose 20mm Rubber Gym Tiles?
20mm is the optimal thickness for the majority of UK home gyms and fitness studios. The extra depth compared to 10–15mm tiles delivers noticeably better shock absorption when dropping free weights, reduces impact noise transmission through the floor, and provides a more stable, comfortable surface under foot during high-intensity training. At 20mm thick, these tiles are also substantial enough to bridge minor surface irregularities in concrete floors without flexing or breaking.
Technical Specifications
Tile size: 1000mm x 1000mm x 20mm. Weight per tile: approximately 20kg. Material: high-density rubber (virgin or recycled EPDM compounds available). Density: 1.1–1.3 g/cm³. Slip resistance rating: R10 (wet and dry). Surface finish: smooth black or black with coloured EPDM speckle. Installation: interlocking puzzle edge, no adhesive required. Coverage per tile: 1 square metre. Compression resistance: withstands static loads of 400kg/m² without permanent deformation.
What Weight Can 20mm Rubber Gym Tiles Support?
Our 20mm rubber gym tiles are rated to support static equipment loads of up to 400kg per square metre without permanent deformation. This is sufficient for most home gym equipment including squat racks, power cages, treadmills, rowing machines, and cable machines. For very heavy commercial equipment (e.g., loaded cable stacks or hammer strength machines exceeding 400kg total weight), we recommend using a base plate or spreading the load across multiple tiles to stay within the rated capacity.
Are 20mm Tiles Suitable for Dropping Barbells?
20mm rubber tiles provide good protection from occasional barbell drops at moderate weight (up to approximately 80–100kg for Olympic barbell exercises). For frequent heavy barbell drops above 100kg (such as heavy Olympic weightlifting or CrossFit workouts with multiple daily drops), we recommend upgrading to our 30mm tiles in the drop zone for optimal floor protection and longer tile lifespan. A dedicated Olympic lifting platform can also be constructed on top of the 20mm base layer using plywood and additional rubber for maximum protection.
How Many 20mm Tiles Do I Need?
Since each tile covers 1 square metre, you need one tile per square metre of floor area (plus 10% extra for edge cuts). Examples: a 10 m² home gym needs 11 tiles; a 20 m² garage gym needs 22 tiles; a 30 m² commercial studio needs 33 tiles. Matching ramp edge and corner pieces are available to finish the perimeter professionally — we recommend these for any permanent installation.
Installation Guide — 20mm Interlocking Rubber Tiles
Step 1: Clear and clean the sub-floor — sweep away all debris and ensure the surface is dry. Step 2: Plan your layout — decide whether to start from the centre or a corner (centre starts give even borders; corner starts minimise cuts). Step 3: Interlock tiles by aligning puzzle edges and pressing firmly together. A rubber mallet helps seat 20mm tiles firmly at the joins. Step 4: Cut edge tiles using a sharp utility knife and straight edge — score the tile 5–6 times along the cut line, then snap cleanly. Step 5: Install ramp edge strips around the perimeter. The entire floor can typically be laid in 2–4 hours depending on the room size.
20mm Rubber Gym Tile FAQs
Can I put heavy equipment directly on 20mm tiles? Yes — standard home gym equipment is within the rated load capacity. Do the tiles smell? New rubber tiles have a natural rubber odour that dissipates within 1–4 weeks with adequate ventilation. Can I use them outdoors? Our standard 20mm tiles are designed for indoor use. For outdoor applications, see our dedicated outdoor rubber tile range. Do they scratch my wooden floor? No — the smooth rubber underside is non-abrasive.
