Technical Specifications
Choose Your Thickness
Thickness is the most critical decision. Each 2mm of additional rubber makes a meaningful difference to impact absorption, noise reduction, and equipment stability. Here's exactly what each thickness is designed for:
Noise Reduction by Thickness
A key reason customers upgrade to thicker rolls — especially for upstairs home gyms and commercial premises above other tenants:
Zone-by-Zone Specification Guide
The most costly gym flooring mistake is using one thickness throughout. Different training zones have completely different load, impact and wear profiles. Here's how to specify correctly:
| Zone | Recommended | Training Type | Why This Thickness |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cardio area (treadmills, bikes, rowers) | 4–6mm | Cardiovascular equipment, light aerobics | Vibration damping from machine motors; easy to clean; cost-effective for large areas |
| Group fitness / studio | 6–8mm | Aerobics, HIIT, yoga, pilates, dance | Comfort underfoot during floor work; some noise reduction for upper-floor studios |
| Functional training / CrossFit warm-up | 8–10mm | Kettlebells, bodyweight, sled push, box jumps | Impact absorption from landing forces; protects subfloor from dropped equipment |
| Free weight area (dumbbells) | 10mm ★ STANDARD | Dumbbells to 30kg, barbells, functional training | Commercial standard spec. Absorbs dropped dumbbell impact without subfloor damage |
| Heavy free weights / barbell floor | 12mm | Heavy barbells, strongman, powerlifting assistance | Maximum impact protection in roll format. Reduces equipment bounce and floor transfer |
| Olympic lifting / deadlift platform | 20mm+ tiles | Repeated barbell drops from height | Roll format not rated for this use — upgrade to our 20–30mm interlocking tiles |
| Reception / corridor | 4–6mm | High foot traffic, entrance areas | Seamless roll format ideal for corridors — no tile joins to catch on equipment |
How Many Metres Do You Need?
These rolls are 1m wide — so 1 linear metre covers exactly 1 m². Simply measure your room length, multiply by room width, and that's your linear metre quantity. Add 10% for cuts and waste.

Why Buy Cut-to-Length Rather Than a Fixed 10m Roll?
- Buy exactly what you need: A 6.3m corridor doesn't need a 10m roll. Ordering by the metre means zero leftover rubber gathering dust — and zero wasted spend
- Perfect for awkward or irregular spaces: L-shaped rooms, rooms under 10m long, stairwells, and oddly-proportioned areas are all served by per-metre ordering. Just measure and order
- Mix thicknesses within the same order: Order 8mm for your cardio zone and 10mm for your free weight area in a single transaction — cut to each zone's exact dimensions
- No minimum order: Need just 1 metre to cover a treadmill bay? Order it. Need 200 metres for a commercial gym fitout? Order that. Same price per metre, same free delivery
- Ideal for repairs and patch replacements: Replacing a damaged section of existing flooring? Order exactly the metres you need to match — no need to commit to a full 10m roll
- Lower initial outlay for large projects: For commercial projects ordering 50+ metres, per-metre pricing with no fixed roll constraint means no over-ordering to hit roll boundaries

Colour Guide
All four colours are manufactured from the same recycled SBR rubber compound. Colour is achieved through EPDM granule content in the top layer — this is a colour that goes through the surface, not a painted or coated finish that can chip or fade:
- Black: Most popular for commercial gyms — conceals chalk dust, scuff marks, and wear in high-traffic environments. The default professional choice
- Red: Used to zone free-weight areas, create visual identity in commercial spaces, or simply for aesthetic preference in home gyms
- Blue: Popular for PT studios, corporate gym environments, school sports halls, and facilities with a blue brand identity
- White / Light Grey: Selected for yoga studios, pilates spaces, functional fitness zones requiring a lighter aesthetic, and high-spec studio environments
Cleaning & Maintenance
- Daily: Sweep or vacuum to remove chalk, grit, and debris — these act as abrasives underfoot and accelerate surface wear
- Weekly: Mop with warm water and a pH-neutral gym floor cleaner. The non-porous rubber surface does not absorb liquids
- Stubborn stains: Diluted white vinegar (1:4 with water) is safe on SBR rubber. Apply, leave for 2 minutes, then mop clean
- Do not use: Steam cleaners, bleach, oil-based products, solvent-based cleaners, or abrasive pads — these degrade the PU binder and surface texture over time
- Odour: New rubber has a characteristic smell that dissipates within 3–7 days in a ventilated space. Open windows and ventilate for the first week to accelerate this
Relevant UK & European Standards
DIN 51130 — R-Rating System
The German standard for slip resistance under oil contamination. R9–R13 scale. Our gym rolls meet R10 — the minimum recommended for wet gymnasium conditions.
Workplace (H,S&W) Regs 1992
Reg 12 requires floors to be suitable, in good condition, and free from obstruction. Rubber gym flooring directly fulfils this obligation for commercial fitness premises.
BS EN ISO 10874 — Use Class
Commercial gym flooring should be specified to Use Class 33 (heavy commercial) or Class 43 (heavy industrial) for high-impact areas. Our 10–12mm rolls meet Class 33.
REACH Compliance
Our rubber flooring is manufactured under REACH (EU chemical safety regulation) — confirming no hazardous substances above regulated thresholds. Essential for NHS and education procurement.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I work out how many metres to order?
These rolls are 1m wide, so 1 linear metre = 1 m² of coverage. Measure your room length and width. If the room is wider than 1m (which it almost certainly is), you'll need multiple runs of roll laid side by side. Example: a 4m × 6m room = 24 m² total, needing 4 runs of 6m each = 24 linear metres ordered. Add 10% for cuts and waste = 27 metres. Call us on 01282 277 710 for a free quantity calculation.
Is there a minimum order quantity?
No minimum. You can order as little as 1 metre or as many as 500+ metres. All orders receive the same per-metre price and free UK delivery. There are no quantity surcharges and no minimum spend threshold.
What subfloors can these rolls go on?
Compatible with concrete, screed, ceramic tile, and most existing hard floors. For timber subfloors, ensure all boards are firmly secured with no movement or spring. Do not install over carpet or compressible surfaces. For underfloor heating: switch off 24 hours before installation and leave off for 48 hours after bonding.
Do the rolls need to be glued down?
For home gym and temporary installations, no adhesive is needed — the weight of the rubber is sufficient on a clean, flat surface. For commercial and permanent installations, use a 2-component polyurethane adhesive (2K PU) for a permanent bond. We recommend Stauf VPU 155 or equivalent.
Can I use these rolls upstairs or in an apartment gym?
Yes — rubber is one of the best flooring materials for above-ground gym installations precisely because of its noise and vibration absorption. For upstairs home gyms, 8–10mm is the minimum we'd recommend; 12mm provides the most effective noise reduction. Loose-lay installation works well for upstairs rooms.
What is the difference between 4mm, 6mm, 8mm, 10mm and 12mm?
Each increase in thickness provides meaningfully better impact absorption, noise reduction, and floor protection. 4mm suits light cardio and yoga. 6–8mm is good for home gyms and PT studios. 10mm is the commercial standard for free weight floors. 12mm is the maximum protection available in roll format. See the zone guide above for specific recommendations by training type.
Can I order different thicknesses and colours in the same order?
Yes. Select your first combination (thickness + colour), add to cart, then return to this page and add additional combinations. Our team cuts each to your specified length before despatch.
Do you offer trade or bulk pricing for large orders?
Yes. We supply commercial gym operators, contractors, NHS trusts, schools and local authorities at trade pricing. Contact our commercial team at sales@gymflooringuk.uk or call 01282 277 710 for a bulk quote — typically turned around within 24 hours.
