✔️ 80kg Drop Rated | ✔️ 950 kg/m³ Density | ✔️ EN 13893 Certified | ✔️ CE & REACH
The 17mm interlocking rubber gym mat is a proven commercial-grade tile in the traditional 3ft × 3ft (915mm × 915mm) format — the established standard for UK gym flooring for over 20 years. At 17mm thick with a high-density SBR rubber construction, these tiles provide reliable impact protection for CrossFit boxes, functional training zones, free weights areas and commercial fitness facilities where daily heavy use is the norm.
The 915mm format sits between 500mm tiles (4 per m²) and 1m² tiles — covering approximately 0.84m² per tile and requiring fewer cuts around obstacles than 1m² tiles while laying faster than 500mm formats. Available with yellow or black 1m safety ramp edges for professional perimeter finishing.

The 3ft × 3ft (915mm) Format — Why It Remains the Commercial Standard
The 915mm format has been the UK commercial gym tile standard for over two decades. It's still widely specified because:
- Manageable solo handling — at ~14kg per tile, one person can lay a full floor without assistance, unlike heavier 1m² tiles at 20–30kg
- Better fit in complex spaces — fewer cuts required around columns, drainage channels, equipment bases and awkward wall angles compared to 1m² tiles
- Fewer joins than 500mm tiles — approximately 1.19 tiles per m² vs 4 tiles per m² for 500mm format
- Established compatibility — replacement tiles available long-term; format consistent across commercial suppliers
- Correct for CrossFit — the 915mm tile is the de facto CrossFit box flooring standard in the UK
Commercial Applications
- ✅ CrossFit boxes and functional training facilities — designed for the demands of daily barbell cycling, box jumps and HIIT
- ✅ Commercial free weights floors — heavy dumbbell areas, plate-loaded equipment zones
- ✅ PT studios — mixed training surfaces for personal training sessions
- ✅ Leisure centre weights areas — high foot traffic, daily heavy use
- ✅ University and sports facility strength rooms — institutional specification
- ✅ Hotel gym weights areas — commercial durability, professional finish
- ⚠️ Olympic lifting with regular barbell drops above 80kg — upgrade to 30mm for dedicated drop zones
Ramp Edge Options — Yellow or Black
Safety ramp edges are required at all exposed perimeter tile edges to provide a smooth transition from the tiled surface to the surrounding floor. Available as 1m straight pieces in two colours:
- Yellow Ramp (1m) — high-visibility safety yellow. Standard for commercial facilities, sports halls and anywhere health and safety colour coding applies. Clearly marks the boundary of the gym floor zone.
- Black Ramp (1m) — matches the black tile colour for a seamless, monolithic appearance. Popular in studio environments and design-conscious commercial facilities.
To calculate ramps: measure your tiled area perimeter in metres = number of 1m ramp pieces needed. Add corner pieces for each external corner.
How Many Tiles for Your Facility?
Each tile covers approximately 0.84m². Tiles needed = floor area ÷ 0.84, then add 10% for cuts. Or simply: multiply your m² by 1.2 (includes 10% waste).
| Area | m² | Tiles (inc. 10%) |
|---|---|---|
| Small CrossFit zone (4m × 5m) | 20 m² | ~26 tiles |
| Commercial weights floor (6m × 6m) | 36 m² | ~46 tiles |
| PT studio (6m × 8m) | 48 m² | ~61 tiles |
| CrossFit box (8m × 10m) | 80 m² | ~102 tiles |
| Large commercial floor (10m × 12m) | 120 m² | ~153 tiles |
Installation
- Acclimatise for 24h — especially important in temperature-variable spaces. Rubber expands at room temperature; tiles installed cold develop visible gaps once they warm up.
- Subfloor preparation — clean, dry and level within ±3mm over 2m. Concrete, screed or timber. Not carpet.
- Layout plan — for CrossFit box floors, start from the rear wall. For rectangular commercial areas, start from the centre and work outward to balance cut widths at both walls.
- Connect tiles — press puzzle edges firmly together. At 14kg per tile, the weight maintains position without adhesive. Work systematically row by row.
- Cut perimeter tiles — score deeply with a sharp Stanley knife and steel straight edge (5–6 passes at 17mm). Snap clean. Use a jigsaw for complex cuts around equipment bases or columns.
- Install ramp edges — fit at all exposed perimeter edges. Choose yellow for safety-critical commercial environments, black for aesthetic continuity.
Maintenance
- Daily: Sweep chalk dust and rubber debris after sessions. Chalk acts as an abrasive underfoot — removing it daily is the single most effective way to extend tile life in commercial environments.
- Session clean: Mop with pH-neutral commercial gym cleaner. Non-porous SBR rubber cleans in one pass.
- Do not use: Bleach, solvent-based cleaners, steam mops, abrasive pads.

Frequently Asked Questions — 17mm Interlocking Gym Mats
Q: What is the coverage of a 3ft × 3ft (915mm) tile?
A: Each tile covers approximately 0.84m² (915mm × 915mm = 0.838m²). You need approximately 1.19 tiles per m² — multiply your floor area in m² by 1.2 to get tile count including 10% for waste.
Q: Why is 915mm still a popular commercial gym tile size?
A: The 3ft × 3ft format has been the UK commercial gym flooring standard for over 20 years. At ~14kg per tile, it's manageable for solo installation unlike heavier 1m² tiles. It also handles complex room shapes with fewer cuts. Replacement tiles in this format are widely available for long-term facility maintenance.
Q: Is 17mm suitable for CrossFit box flooring?
A: Yes — 17mm is widely specified for CrossFit boxes. It handles daily barbell cycling, box jumps, rope climbs (mat protection under rig feet), and functional training. For a dedicated Olympic lifting platform within a CrossFit box, add 30mm tiles to that specific zone.
Q: What is the difference between yellow and black ramp edges?
A: Both are the same profile — a 1m bevelled safety ramp that transitions from tile height to floor level. Yellow is high-visibility, standard for commercial facilities where safety colour coding is required or preferred. Black matches the tile colour for a seamless monolithic look in design-critical environments.
Q: Can these tiles be used outdoors?
A: These are designed for indoor use. SBR rubber tolerates occasional moisture but UV exposure, freeze-thaw cycles and standing water degrade the compound over time in fully outdoor environments. For covered outdoor spaces (roofed CrossFit rigs, covered terraces), these tiles perform well. For fully exposed outdoor areas, see our UV-stabilised outdoor range.
Q: Do you offer trade pricing for CrossFit or commercial gym orders?
A: Yes. We supply CrossFit boxes, leisure centres, university strength facilities and commercial operators. Send your floor dimensions for a quote within 24 hours. Bulk palletised delivery available for orders over 50m².
