Why 17mm — Not 15mm or 20mm
17mm sits in the sweet spot for home gyms and multi-use studios: meaningfully thicker than entry-level 15mm tiles (more cushioning, better noise reduction) without the extra weight and cost of 20mm tiles. At 17kg per 1m² tile it's manageable solo, yet dense enough for squat racks, treadmills, and regular dumbbell use.
| Thickness | Best For | Equipment / Load | Key Difference |
|---|---|---|---|
| 10–12mm | Light cardio, yoga, stretching | Bodyweight, light machines | Basic protection, minimal noise reduction |
| 15mm | Home gyms, light free weights | Dumbbells to 15kg, treadmills | Entry-level protection, lower cost per m² |
| 17mm ★ THIS PRODUCT | Home gyms, PT studios, CrossFit warm-up | Dumbbells to 30kg, squat racks, machines | Better cushion than 15mm, lighter than 20mm, ideal for height-restricted thresholds |
| 20mm | Commercial gyms, heavier free weights | Heavy barbells, dumbbells to 40kg+ | Standard commercial spec — worth upgrading if ceiling height allows |
| 30mm+ | Olympic lifting platforms, powerlifting | Barbell drops, 200kg+ loads | Maximum protection — see our 30mm tiles |
What Equipment Does 17mm Support?
At 350kg/m² static load rating, these tiles support the vast majority of home gym setups. Here's a practical guide by equipment type:
✅ Treadmills & Cardio Machines
Treadmills, rowers, cross trainers, air bikes. 17mm absorbs machine vibration effectively and provides thermal insulation for garage gym installations in cold weather.
✅ Squat Racks & Power Cages
Freestanding and wall-mounted squat racks, power cages, and half racks. Static weight of rack + plates well within 350kg/m² rating. Tiles don't compress or indent under static rack feet.
✅ Dumbbells & Kettlebells
Dumbbell sets up to 30kg individual, kettlebells, medicine balls. Light controlled drops absorbed cleanly. For heavier dumbbell drops (30kg+), consider a landing mat in the drop zone.
✅ Functional Training
Sled push zones, box jumps, HIIT circuits, CrossFit warm-up work, resistance bands, battle ropes. The non-slip textured surface provides stable footing for lateral movements.
✅ Cable Machines & Benches
Cable crossovers, lat pulldown, pec dec, weight benches. Point loads from machine feet distributed across tile area — well within rating.
⚠️ Heavy Barbell Drops
Regular Olympic barbell drops above 80kg are better suited to 30mm tiles. For occasional controlled lowering of moderate loads, 17mm is adequate. Add a rubber landing mat for dedicated lifting zones.
Where These Mats Are Installed
How the Interlocking System Works
These tiles use a 4-sided precision puzzle edge — each side has matching male/female interlocking profiles that connect tiles without any adhesive, screws, or specialist tools. Once engaged, the combined weight of the tiles and equipment holds the floor in position without movement during training.
Installation Guide — 17mm Interlocking Tiles
A typical 20m² floor takes one person 2–3 hours. No tools required beyond a sharp utility knife for perimeter cuts.
How Many Tiles Do You Need?
Each tile covers exactly 1 m² (1m × 1m). Measure your room length × width for total sqm, then add 10% for cuts. Below are common gym sizes:

Matching Safety Ramps — Why You Need Them
The 17mm edge is a trip hazard without ramps
A 17mm vertical edge at the perimeter of your gym floor creates a genuine trip hazard — particularly for anyone walking in wearing training shoes. Our matching ramps (available in yellow for high-visibility or black for a seamless look) provide a smooth bevelled transition from floor level to tile surface. For commercial installations, perimeter ramps are required under UK Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations 1992.
- Yellow ramps: High-visibility — ideal for commercial premises, warehouses, and any space where the floor boundary needs to be clearly marked for safety
- Black ramps: Seamless aesthetic — preferred for home gyms and PT studios where visual continuity matters more than high-visibility
- Quantity needed: One 1m ramp piece per linear metre of exposed perimeter edge. A 4m × 5m room has approximately 18m of perimeter = 18 ramp pieces. Order 2–3 extra for corner cuts

Maintenance — Rubber Gym Mats Are the Easiest Floor to Keep Clean
- Daily: Sweep or vacuum to remove chalk, grit, and sand — these act as abrasives underfoot and cause unnecessary surface wear
- Weekly: Mop with warm water and pH-neutral gym cleaner. The non-porous rubber surface does not absorb liquids — spills and sweat wipe clean instantly
- Individual tile cleaning: If a specific tile gets heavily soiled, lift it from the floor (the interlocking edge releases with a firm upward pull), clean both sides, and relay
- Do not use: Bleach, solvent-based cleaners, steam mops, or oil-based products — these degrade the rubber and surface texture over time
- Odour: New rubber has a characteristic smell that fades within 3–7 days in a ventilated space
Frequently Asked Questions
Is 17mm thick enough for a home gym with a squat rack?
Yes. The 350kg/m² static load rating comfortably supports the weight of a typical home gym squat rack loaded with plates. For regular heavy barbell drops (failed lifts, Olympic lifting), we recommend a 30mm tile or a rubber landing mat placed in the drop zone on top of the 17mm floor.
Will these tiles move or slip during training?
Under normal conditions, no. The combined weight of 17kg per tile and the interlocking puzzle edges create a stable floor that doesn't shift during training. For gyms with very smooth concrete or polished screed subfloors where tiles might slide before equipment is placed, a small amount of non-slip matting tape at the perimeter is all that's needed.
Can I lay these on top of carpet?
We don't recommend it. Carpet is a compressible surface — placing heavy gym equipment on rubber tiles over carpet causes the tiles to deflect and sink at the edges, making the interlocking edges lift. For best results, lift the carpet and install directly on the concrete or screed subfloor beneath. If you cannot remove the carpet, a 20mm+ tile will perform better on that substrate.
Can I use these in a garage gym in winter?
Yes — but acclimatisation is crucial. Always allow tiles to sit at room temperature for at least 24 hours before installation if the garage has been cold. Rubber is stiffer when cold, which makes puzzle edge connections harder and can cause tiles to separate slightly when the rubber contracts overnight. Once installed and at temperature, the floor performs normally year-round.
How do I cut tiles for awkward shapes or around obstacles?
Mark your cut line with a chalk line or felt-tip marker. Score firmly along the line with a sharp utility knife and metal straight edge — score 4–5 passes at 17mm thickness. The tile will snap cleanly along the score line. For curved cuts (around pillars or pipes), use a jigsaw with a coarse blade. Always cut on a sacrificial board to protect your floor and extend blade life.
Are these mats suitable for upstairs home gym installations?
Yes, 17mm rubber tiles are a good choice for upstairs rooms. The rubber density absorbs impact vibration and reduces the noise transmitted to rooms below. For upstairs installations with heavy free weights, we recommend also using anti-vibration feet under any racks or machines to maximise sound reduction.
How many ramps do I need?
Order one 1m ramp piece per linear metre of exposed perimeter edge. Calculate your room perimeter (length + width) × 2. For a 4m × 5m room: (4+5) × 2 = 18m of perimeter = 18 ramps. Add 2–3 extra for corner cuts and waste. Order yellow ramps for high-visibility safety marking, or black ramps for a seamless aesthetic match.
Do you offer trade or bulk pricing for larger orders?
